HALF DAY ITINERARIES
Florence is surrounded by hills, so any cycling itinerary will involve tackling some hills, some steep and some less so.
Below are some itineraries that we regularly suggest to those wishing to escape the crowds, churches and museums in search of pleasant panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside.
Below are some possible routes, traced using the MapMyRide website.
MapMyRide is accessible to everyone so you can have fun tracing alternative routes that suit your needs better, view the distances in km or miles, look at the altimetry and choose the type of map that you like best. The same site allows you to download the routes to your GPS device.
We’ve done our best to also provide a printable version of the routes we suggest; the scale and layout of the maps may differ from each other.

FLORENCE SANTA MARGHERITA TO MONTICI AND BACK
A short route that leads you to the gates of Florence, do-able in around 2 or 3 hours

FLORENCE MAIANO FIESOLE AND BACK
A tough climb on an urban route, mainly on cycle paths and quiet roads; it’s advisable to be in good shape. At Maiano we advice stopping at the Fattoria di Maiano, before continuing on to Fiesole, then it’s downhill all the way back!

FLORENCE IMPRUNETA AND BACK
This road takes you on a series of ups and downs leading to the gates of Chianti; a tough route on roads usually fairly free of traffic. Once you’ve left the city you’ll have plenty of opportunity to take wonderful photos of olive groves, vineyards and Impruneta, renowned for its square and terracotta production.

FLORENCE STRADA IN CHIANTI FALCIANI AND BACK
A variation of the Impruneta ride: those who feel like it can continue for a few more km towards Strada in Chianti (a beautiful road, not to mention being mostly downhill!) and return to Florence passing by Il Ferrone and Falciani. The route back is so-so in terms of scenery, but fairly straightforward. It can, however, be traffic-congested.

FLORENCE PONTASSIEVE AND BACK
An excursion decidedly within everyone’s reach; we only advise you follow this route at the weekend, as the traffic can be heavy on weekdays.

FLORENCE SAN CASCIANO AND BACK
The first stretch is quite straightforward and at times you’ll meet traffic, if so just keep to the right and leave space for the cars to overtake you. The second stretch is decidedly panoramic and rises for 6km towards San Casciano and then continues along the road back. The final stretch is a steep downhill and returns you to the city.
